Race format

The objective is to complete the entire course as quickly as possible or to go as far as possible within the time limit (8 hours or 4 hours).

The course consists of checkpoints that must be visited in numerical order.

If a team cannot complete the full course, it may, after abandoning the numerical order, collect any remaining checkpoints on the way to the finish.

Teams must stay together for the entire race.

Checkpoints

Not all checkpoints will have a flag or visible marker. Instead, each checkpoint includes a question that can be answered at the exact location, ensuring the team has found the right spot. Some checkpoints also have a flag to help locate the site.

Questions are clear and straightforward — there are no trick questions. The checkpoint descriptions specify exactly where to find the answer. Sample checkpoints will be displayed at the event centre.

Examples:

  • ”Road sign at the junction: How many kilometres to Enonkoski?”

  • ”Which animal is shown on the information board? A) bear B) wolf C) deer”

Mobile phones

Each team must carry at least one mobile phone packed waterproof.

In the competitive categories (8 h Men, Women, Mixed), mobile phones may be used only in emergencies or if the team withdraws. These phones must be sealed after registration, and the seal will be checked at the finish.

In the recreational categories (8 h Recreational, 4 h), mobile phones may be used freely during the race.

Emergencies & Withdrawals

In serious or urgent emergencies, contact the emergency centre primarily using the 112 Suomi mobile app. Make sure before the race that the app has permission to access your phone’s location.

Every team is obliged to assist any fellow competitors in distress.

If a team must withdraw due to injury or other reasons, or cannot reach the finish in time, it may request transport back to the finish from the event centre.

Please note that the organiser’s transport capacity is limited, and it may take time for transport to arrive.

Responsibilities

All participants take part at their own risk.

Each competitor is responsible for having appropriate sports and accident insurance and for any damage caused to landowners, traffic, or other third parties.

Land Access Rights

Movement in the terrain follows Finland’s traditional “Everyone’s Rights and Responsibilities.”

Special care must be taken when landing or launching packrafts. Private piers may not be used, and participants must not enter yards, gardens, or cultivated fields.

Please also avoid disturbing wildlife, such as detouring around bird nesting sites.

Photography

Each team will be photographed before and after the race. Pre-race photos will be taken between the map distribution and the gathering at the start area. It is the team’s responsibility to ensure they are photographed.

Photos of participants will also be taken during the race.

Participants may use the photos for their own non-commercial purposes (CC BY-NC). If you share the photos on your own social media, please credit the race and the photographer.

Photos may also be used by Kairacross for marketing and communications related to the event.
