the idea of the competition

The aim is to navigate the course as fast as possible. Control points must be visited in their numerical order. The finish line must be crossed before the deadline.

Teams travel the course using muscle power only. A packraft or some other human powered watercraft is obligatory when moving on the water.

The whole team travels together at all times carrying their equipment themselves.

rESULTS

The team that completes the entire course first is the winner.

  • If no team completes the entire course before the deadline, the team who visits the most control points (and finishes before the deadline) wins.

  • If more than one team visits the same number of control points, the team that finishes first wins.

  • The final result of a given team may be affected by penalties resulting from being late (only in Vätsäri 5-day) or breaking the rules.

TWO COMPETITIONS

Featuring two courses of different lengths, Kairacross offers two competitions: Vätsäri 3-day and Vätsäri 5-day. Both start at the same time, and the teams can decide during the competition whether they participate in Vätsäri 3-day or Vätsäri 5-day.

Teams crossing the finish line before the 3-day finish time participate in the Vätsäri 3-day while the remaining teams participate in Vätsäri 5-day.

Deadlines

Both races have a deadline and the Vätsäri 5-day also has a one hour grace period.

  • If a team finishes before the deadline (and has not been given any penalties), the team’s final result is the number of control points visited.

  • If a team finishes after the 3-day deadline (72 hours), it participates in the 5-day race

  • If a team misses 5-day deadline (120 hours), it has one hour grace period to finish.

  • If a team finishes during the grace period, the number of controls team had find will will be reduced by one.

  • If a team finishes after the grace period (121 hours), it won’t get an result.
